Position Overview

The Motion Capture Reference Camera Operator plays a critical role in the cinematics pipeline by capturing real-time video reference of actors' performances. This footage is essential for animators and developers to capture the subtle nuances of acting that raw data might miss. Operating a studio-provided handheld reference camera integrated into an automated recording system, this freelance/part-time position is an excellent entry-level opportunity for film, photography students looking to master camera work in a cutting-edge, high-tech environment. No personal equipment is required.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Production & Preparation

  • Review and analyze provided pre-production materials (including scripts, animatics, and studio floor plans with designated camera paths) prior to shoot days.
  • Study the visual style and editing rhythm of the prepared animatics to understand the framing and camera movement goals for each scene before stepping onto the stage.

Camera Operation & Cinematography

  • Operate the handheld studio reference camera during live capture sessions, ensuring steady, high-quality reference footage.
  • Apply fundamental cinematography principles, including sharp manual/auto focusing, proper exposure control (Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO), and framerate management.
  • Maintain strong compositional awareness, utilizing the Rule of Thirds/Golden Ratio to frame the performance effectively.

On-Set Technical Management & Stage Etiquette

  • Manage the physical camera setup on set, proactively monitoring battery levels and ensuring the handheld rig is always powered and ready before the automated recording triggers.
  • Maintain high spatial awareness on the volume, ensuring the operator's physical presence does not block the optical motion capture cameras or interfere with the actors' movements.
  • Maintain multi-camera awareness, tracking how the handheld camera coordinates with other fixed reference cameras on the stage to avoid covering the same angles.
  • Monitor the live feed connection to ensure the direct-to-storage recording remains stable throughout the shooting day.

Requirements & Skills

  • Current University Student (ideally focusing on Cinematography, Film Production, Audiovisual Studies, or Interactive Media).
  • Solid foundational knowledge of camera mechanics (exposure triangle, focus pulling, white balance, and framerates).
  • Ability to interpret basic production documentation, such as scripts, floor plans, and pre-visualization/animatic materials.
  • Strong understanding of spatial orientation, screen direction, and visual storytelling.
  • Highly proactive attitude with a strong desire to learn and adapt to specific technical workflows.
  • Receptive to constructive feedback and direction in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional proficiency in English and Czech (or Slovak) to ensure smooth communication with the director and crew.
